Up to $3,000 in scholarships are available for Plattsburgh students accepted to study on a Plattsburgh study abroad program. We are honored to extend this generous gift from Dodie Giltz and her family, who been instrumental in the internationalization of our campus. U.S. citizenship or permanent U.S. residency required.
The Drs. Horace and Gail Judson Endowed Scholarship
Up to $2,000 in scholarships are available for a SUNY Plattsburgh student accepted to study on a Plattsburgh study abroad program. As a distinguished former president of SUNY Plattsburgh, Dr. Horace Judson, and his accomplished wife, Dr. Gail Judson, endeavored to facilitate global education for all of our university’s students. We are honored to promote this award to qualified students with demonstrated financial need and/or those from backgrounds underrepresented on study abroad programs.
The Rosenberg Pathways to Peace Awards
Up to $500 in scholarships are available for a SUNY Plattsburgh participant on each of the faculty-led study abroad programs offered by SUNY Plattsburgh faculty each semester. Mr. Rosenberg’s generous support of Plattsburgh’s study abroad programs is rooted in his desire to spread international understanding and peace. These awards honor his legacy as well as the extraordinary work of our globally minded faculty.
Bond University Scholarship
Bond University offers excellent academic opportunities and access to the beautiful Gold Coast. Up to $8,000 in scholarships are available for Plattsburgh students accepted to study at Bond University. This scholarship is not offered every semester. Please contact our office if you would like to see if this scholarship will be available for the semester you are planning on going abroad.
Ritsumeikan University offers an excellent scholarship through the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO). Eligible Plattsburgh students accepted to study at Ritsumeikan University are nominated by the university to receive a generous monthly stipend of 80,000 Yen for a period of 4-10 months. Killam Fellowship for Study In Canada
One $5000 per semester scholarship is available for a SUNY Plattsburgh student who plans to study abroad in Canada. The scholarship includes an allowance for in-country travel and health insurance, as well as travel and accommodation for an orientation in Ottawa and a spring seminar in Washington, D.C. German Academic Exchange Service Scholarship
SUNY Plattsburgh students interested in participating in the exchange program at Aschaffenburgh University of Applied Sciences in Germany for the 2018/2019 academic year can apply for this scholarship of approximately $500 to support travel costs. Students who are interested in this scholarship need to be nominated first by the Plattsburgh Study Abroad Office. Please contact the Plattsburgh Study Abroad Office if you are interested in applying to this scholarship.
SUNY Diversity Abroad Honors Scholarship Program (DAHSP)
The State University of New York's Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) is again offering its undergraduate scholarship program to diverse students interested in participating in one of SUNY's many study abroad programs. To apply for this award of up to $2,000, please refer to the guidelines and application form attached below. Please note that all applicants will also need to submit a reference form in addition to their application form and required essay. Once complete, please submit to the Global Education Office by October 1, 2018 for study in winter/spring 2019 and March 1, 2019 for study in summer or fall of 2019 . Please do not hesitate to contact the Global Education Office with questions.
Applied Learning Grant Through the Career Development Center
We also strongly recommend speaking with the Career Development Center about the Applied Learning Grant available for students who are participating in summer and semester study abroad programs. In order to be eligible, you must be either participating in an internship abroad or taking courses related to your major. You can read more about the application process here.
Outside of SUNY Plattsburgh, there are a number of scholarships to apply for as well. These scholarships can be more competitive due to the high number of applicants.
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship: This scholarship is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.
Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants: The Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Seventy-five $1,000 grants are awarded each year. You must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.75 to be eligible.
Boren Awards for International Study: The Boren Scholarship is a very competitive national program available to undergraduate U.S. citizens. Boren Scholarships are awarded with preference for countries, languages, and fields of study critical to U.S. national security. Preference is also given to students who will study abroad for longer periods of time, and who are highly motivated by the opportunity to work in the federal government. Programs in Canada, Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand are not eligible.
Institute for International Education (IIE) Generation Study Abroad Travel Grants: This scholarship of up to $2,000 is made available for U.S students from diverse backgrounds with consideration given to applicants who demonstrate financial need, are first-generation college students, are members of underrepresented racial/ethnic/gender groups, those with disabilities, or those who lack experience with travel abroad. Travel grants can be used for travel to and from host country, as well as within host country region.
Fund for Education Abroad: This scholarship of up to $5,000 is eligible for U.S. citizen undergraduate students. Preference is given to underrepresented students who are studying in non-traditional locations.
GoOverseas $500 Study & Intern Abroad Scholarship: This scholarship is for any study currently enrolled in an American institution. The application requires that you submit a creative photo and essay along with following @GoOverseas on Instagram.
Go Overseas and Scotland is Now are giving away a $15,000 scholarship to study abroad in Scotland. You will need to submit a short essay and upload a creative picture. The deadline to apply is February 10th. To our knowledge, the following SUNY universities are participating:

Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship: This $1,000 scholarship is eligible for U.S. citizen undergraduate students. You are required to write a 500 word essay about what you hope to learn by experiencing another culture.
Study Abroad Journal Scholarship: The Study Abroad Journal offers one $500 scholarship. International students are welcomed and encouraged to apply. The application requires a short essay and a creative photo or video that illustrates what study abroad means to you.
Good Colleges Study Abroad Award: This scholarship of $2,000 is eligible for U.S. citizen undergraduate students. You are required to write a 150-250 word essay that answers the round's theme.
StudyAbroad Intern & Volunteer Abroad Scholarship: This $500 scholarship is specifically for students who will be interning or volunteering abroad. You are required to write a 250 word essay about why you chose to intern or volunteer abroad.
Weekend Student Adventures Cultural Bridge Scholarship: This $500 scholarship is awarded to a student who will be studying in Europe and demonstrates a strong passion and motivation for international education. You must be a U.S. citizen and have at least a 3.0 GPA to apply.
Freeman-Asia Scholarship: The Freeman Awards for Study in Asia provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. The semester award is up to $5,000 and the summer award is up to $3,000
Education New Zealand Study Abroad Travel Awards: $2,000 is offered to help U.S. citizens fund their flight to New Zealand. $500 is also available for study at one of the eight New Zealand universities.You must hold at least a minimum of a 3.0 GPA to apply.
The Marshall Scholarship: is for U.S. citizens who will be studying at a graduate level at an UK institution in any field of study.

InternationalScholarships also has a database of available scholarships for study abroad. You can also search available scholarships based on your study abroad location and the subject you will be studying.
StudyAbroad provides a very user friendly list of scholarships that are available based on merit, location, subject, etc.
GoOverseas 65+ Study Abroad Grants and Scholarships This blog post that was updated in February of 2017 is also very user-friendly and lays out the requirements to apply, the award amount, the deadline, etc.
Additional Funding Opportunities
Donation sites have recently become an effective way for students to raise money. Often students will post links to their donate site on Facebook, which can lead to a great amount of positive response. Two of the most popular fundraising sites are GoFundMe and Fund My Travel.
